Merivale HS - IB Programme Application Information for 2020

CAT test sessions: Families choose ONE date for the student applicant to attend. Registration is now CLOSED. Space is limited for each date.

East Location: Colonel By SS, Saturday, January 11, 2020 

West Location: Merivale HS, Saturday, January 18, 2020

CAT Test Start Time for both dates is 8:30 AM

See expectations noted below for students registered to participate:

  • Students should arrive 30 minutes ahead of the start time for the CAT Session to check in.
  • Students are responsible for bringing pencils, eraser, and a standard calculator to the session. No other materials will be permitted.  Please make sure students have all materials at time of drop off. 
  • Students are reminded to bring a water bottle (water only) and a healthy snack for their short break. 
  • Students may bring a book to read should they finish a part of the test early. 
  • Students/parents should expect the session to take 4.5 hours. 
  • Parents/guardians are not permitted to interact with their student at any time during the test period.  
  • There is NO waiting area for parents/guardians. Please do not expect to wait at the school
  • Parents/guardians are asked to return to pick up their student between 12:45 - 1:15 PM. Students who have completed the CAT will be waiting in the Cafeteria. 
  • For Merivale HS (Jan. 18th) please note that the doors at the front of the school (Door A) and west side (Door I) will be the only doors designated for entry/exit. 
  • Parking is available on campus on the sides and rear of the school and in our lower lot next to the arena. Please do not block the drop off area at the front door.

Please note that there are geographic boundaries related to applying to Merivale High School’s IB Programme.

  • A student's designated International Baccalaureate school is determined by their home address.

  • The IB School Locator Tool will identify a student's designated site. More detailed information on the catchment areas is available on the OCDSB website.

For September 2020, Merivale HS will accept applications for entry points in grade 9 and grade 10.  All grade 10 applications are subject to available space.

IB World SchoolFollowing a two year process that engaged students, families, the community, the OCDSB, and school staff at all levels, Merivale High School is proud to announce the school’s recent Authorization as an IB World School for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Merivale HS welcomes our first class of pre-diploma students in September of 2019 into grade 9. Subsequent grades will be added over a three year period, culminating in the first cohort graduating in June, 2023.

Merivale High School joins Colonel By Secondary School as the only other OCDSB school offering this specialized learning experience.

Program Description

Diploma ProgrammeThe IBDP is a rigorous pre-university course of studies and is offered to students over their grade 11 and grade 12 year. Preparation for the challenge of the IB Diploma is begun in grade 9 and grade 10 through the enrichment and acceleration of various courses. All successful candidates for the IB Diploma also meet all requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Success in the IBDP at Merivale HS requires time management, self-motivation, organization, commitment and interest. Students must be able to balance their academic responsibilities with participation in extracurricular activities and community service. IB students are those who are willing to rise to the challenge of an international program and in meeting that challenge grow into young adults ready for the challenges of post-secondary education and beyond.
