Merivale HS – IB World School Authorization, June, 2019

IB World SchoolFollowing a two year process that engaged students, families, the community, the OCDSB, and school staff at all levels, Merivale High School is proud to announce the school’s recent Authorization as an IB World School for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Merivale HS welcomes our first class of pre-diploma students in September of 2019 into grade 9. Subsequent grades will be added over a three year period, culminating in the first cohort graduating in June, 2023.

Merivale High School joins Colonel By Secondary School as the only other OCDSB school offering this specialized learning experience.

Program Description

Diploma ProgrammeThe IBDP is a rigorous pre-university course of studies and is offered to students over their grade 11 and grade 12 year. Preparation for the challenge of the IB Diploma is begun in grade 9 and grade 10 through the enrichment and acceleration of various courses. All successful candidates for the IB Diploma also meet all requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Success in the IBDP at Merivale HS requires time management, self-motivation, organization, commitment and interest. Students must be able to balance their academic responsibilities with participation in extracurricular activities and community service. IB students are those who are willing to rise to the challenge of an international program and in meeting that challenge grow into young adults ready for the challenges of post-secondary education and beyond.

IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

For more general information on the IB Diploma Programme, families are encouraged to visit the International Baccalaureate website.
